Senior Researcher in Theoretical Photonics, Simulation and Initial Prototyping

Location: Barcelona (Hospitalet de Llobregat) and Laboratories | On-site

Start date: Immediate

Project: Deep Tech | Photonics | Microelectronics | R&D&I

Contract type: Temporary project-based (6–12 months, with possibility of extension)

What are we looking for?

As part of the groundbreaking Tarranix Project, we are seeking a senior researcher with experience in advanced photonics who is capable of:

  • Evaluating the scientific feasibility of a 3D optical transistor with six logical states based on light polarization

  • Simulating its behavior using specialized software (training provided if needed)

  • Developing and characterizing an initial functional prototype at the millimetric ornanometric scale to validate its basic performance

This is a strategic position that will define the technological core of a one-of-a-kind photonic chip, with the potential to overcome silicon limitations and offer a viable alternative to quantum computing.

Responsibilities

  • In-depth review of the state of the art in multilevel photonic logic and advanced optical materials

  • Development and characterization of the physical and mathematical model of the proposed transistor

  • Writing of the scientific feasibility report of the device

  • Functional simulation using tools such as Lumerical, COMSOL, or similar (with team support)

  • Design and implementation of an initial physical prototype (optical bench or microfabrication)

  • Execution or support of the experimental optical characterization of the prototype: spectral analysis, insertion loss, polarization response, etc.

  • Comparative analysis with conventional electronic transistors

  • Collaboration with the chip design team for future scaling phases

  • Contribution to scientific publications, patent writing, and participation in international conferences

Requirements

Education

PhD in Physics, Photonics, Applied Optics, Nanoscience, or related fields

Experience
  • 5+ years of research in advanced photonics, theoretical optics, or optoelectronic device design

  • Experience in designing and experimentally characterizing integrated photonic circuits

  • Relevant publications in international scientific journals

  • Experience in prototyping (millimetric or nanometric scale) is desirable, but not required

Skills
  • Strategic scientific vision, rigorous reasoning, and technical creativity

  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

  • Good command of technical English

What we offer
  • Direct participation in a disruptive deep-tech project with global impact

  • Collaboration with experts in photonic design, materials science, AI, and advanced computing

  • Flexible hours and potential compatibility with academic career

  • Scientific recognition as co-author of the foundational concept of the Tarranix transistor

  • Long-term career prospects as Head of R&D in Photonic Computing

About Tarranix

Tarranix is a science and technology initiative based in Spain focused on the development of the first 3D multilevel photonic chip. This chip is based on spherical optical transistors capable of representing six logical states using light polarization. Supported by public funding and industrial partnerships, Tarranix represents a new paradigm in computing, with potential applications in AI, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.
