Beyond Distance: How Virtual Experiences Can Open New Doors to Learning and Access

August 12 marks International Youth Day, an opportunity to reflect on the challenges, ambitions and opportunities shaping the lives of young people around the world.
This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, highlights a simple but powerful reality: young people may grow up in very different social, economic and geographical circumstances, yet many share similar aspirations. Access to quality education, opportunities to participate, meaningful work and the possibility of building a better future are ambitions that cross borders.
What differs, however, is the ability to access those opportunities.
Where we live, the resources available to us and our ability to travel can all influence the places we discover, the experiences we have and the ways we learn. A museum, cultural landmark, exhibition or educational experience might be relatively easy for one person to reach and thousands of kilometres or financially out of reach for another.
Shared aspirations do not always mean shared opportunities.
And that raises an interesting question for those of us working with technology and experience design: can virtual environments help create new ways in?
When physical distance becomes a barrier
There is something irreplaceable about being physically present.
Walking through a historic building, standing in front of an artwork, exploring an exhibition or sharing an experience with other people engages us in ways that are difficult to reproduce digitally.
But physical experiences also come with physical limitations.
Travel costs money. Geography creates distance. Venues have capacity. Some experiences only exist in particular cities or countries. Personal circumstances can also make travelling difficult or impossible.
For many people, therefore, the choice is not necessarily between experiencing something physically or virtually.
Sometimes the choice is between experiencing it virtually or not experiencing it at all.
This is where immersive technology can offer a different perspective on accessibility.
Rather than asking whether virtual experiences can replace physical ones, perhaps a more interesting question is whether they can extend their reach.
Opening a door where there wasn’t one before
Virtual environments can make it possible to explore a place without physically travelling there. They can bring cultural, educational and interactive content to audiences regardless of location and create experiences that would be difficult or even impossible to reproduce in the physical world.
At Brainlab Fira this is one of the possibilities we explore through Brainlaverse: using immersive virtual environments not simply to recreate physical spaces, but to explore new ways for people to access, discover and interact with content.
A virtual visit will never be exactly the same as standing in the physical place nor does it need to be.
Its value can lie somewhere else.
It can provide an opportunity to someone who cannot travel because of distance or cost. It can allow an experience to reach audiences beyond the capacity or geographical limitations of a venue. And it can create new ways of navigating information, interacting with content and discovering a subject.
In other words, immersive technology can help open a door where there previously wasn’t one.
From access to virtual learning experiences
What if visiting a historical site did not always require being physically there?
Through virtual environments, cultural and educational spaces can become accessible remotely, allowing users not only to see a place but also to explore it and discover the stories behind it.
One example within Brainlaverse is a virtual experience that allows users to explore Montcortès Castle, an historic Spanish castle, while discovering information about its history and significance along the way.
The potential becomes particularly interesting when we think about education.
Learning does not have to mean simply reading information or watching content on a screen. Virtual environments can allow people to explore, interact and learn through experience.
Imagine visiting a historical location thousands of kilometres away without leaving the classroom. Exploring a virtual environment designed around a scientific concept. Walking through an exhibition that exists physically in another country. Or interacting with objects and information in ways that would not be possible in reality.
These experiences can turn learning from something we consume into something we actively explore.
And because the environment itself is digital, the experience does not necessarily have to reproduce the limitations of the physical world. Objects can change scale. Information can appear contextually. Different scenarios can be simulated. Users can move through a story at their own pace.
The question therefore becomes bigger than simply providing virtual access to a physical place.
How can we use immersive technology to make knowledge more experiential and accessible without making physical presence a prerequisite?
Learning together in virtual spaces
Access to educational content is only part of the picture. Virtual environments can also become spaces where learning happens together.
This is an area Brainlaverse is continuing to explore with its private classroom functionality, which enables teachers to create dedicated virtual learning spaces for groups of students.
Within these spaces, educators have tools to organise and manage the learning experience, from student groups and assignments to quizzes, challenges, feedback and virtual field trips. This means that immersive exploration does not have to exist separately from the classroom experience. It can become part of a structured learning journey.

Together, these possibilities can create a more connected learning journey.
A teacher could bring a group of students into a shared virtual environment, take them on a virtual field trip to a historical location and then use interactive activities, challenges or quizzes to reinforce what they have discovered.
In this context, immersive technology is doing more than giving students something new to look at. It is creating a shared space in which they can explore and learn together. And when the physical destination is far away or difficult to access, that shared virtual space can offer another route to discovery.
Access is more than putting something online
Of course, creating a virtual experience does not automatically make it inclusive.
Digital environments have their own barriers. Access to devices and reliable internet connections is not universal. Digital literacy varies, and accessibility, language and usability all need to be considered when designing an experience.
Technology can remove certain barriers while unintentionally creating others.
That is why inclusion needs to begin with the way an experience is designed, rather than with the technology chosen to deliver it.
Who will be able to access it? What device will they need? How intuitive is the experience? Can people with different abilities participate? Is the content understandable to different audiences?
These questions matter if virtual experiences are genuinely going to broaden access rather than simply provide another technological layer.
Different contexts, more ways to participate
International Youth Day reminds us that young people do not all begin from the same starting point.
Technology cannot eliminate economic inequality, geographical barriers or unequal access to education on its own. Nor should a virtual experience be presented as a substitute for every physical experience.
However technology can give us additional ways to share knowledge, experiences and opportunities.
That distinction matters.
The most meaningful role for immersive technology may not be to replace the physical world, but to extend what is possible beyond its boundaries: enabling someone to explore a place they cannot reach, discover something they might never otherwise encounter or learn through an experience that was previously unavailable to them.
This year’s International Youth Day theme is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” Perhaps our role as designers and technologists is to think about how we can create more pathways towards those aspirations.
Because we may not be able to remove every barrier.
But we can keep designing new doors.
