A new technological initiative based in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat is drawing attention in the field of advanced computing. According to a recent article published by L’H Digital, a local startup is developing pioneering photonic chips that could mark a significant shift in how data is processed.
As reported by L’H Digital, the project is being developed by Tarranix, a project of Brainlab Fira. Unlike conventional electronic processors, these chips are based on photonic technology, which uses light instead of electrical signals to perform computations. This approach aims to overcome some of the physical and energy limitations of traditional silicon-based microprocessors.
The article explains that photonic chips allow information to travel at much higher speeds, as light can transmit data faster than electrical currents. According to the project’s developers, this could result in processors that are up to six times faster than current technologies. In addition, photonic systems generate significantly less heat, which translates into much lower energy consumption.
These characteristics make photonic processors particularly suitable for applications that require intensive computing power, such as artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and large-scale data processing. As demand for these technologies continues to grow, energy efficiency has become a critical challenge for the sector.
L’H Digital also reports that the Tarranix project is currently in the prototype development phase, with the first functional prototype expected by 2026. The company’s stated objective is to control the full production process, from chip design to manufacturing, with future plans that include industrial deployment within Catalonia.
This development highlights the presence of advanced technological research in L’Hospitalet and reflects the role of local innovation ecosystems in contributing to emerging fields such as photonic computing.
